The 7 layer system of classifying organisms

Carolus Linneaus is known as the father of taxonomy. He has been credited with the construction of the upside down triangle / pyramid that is widely used to classify organisms.

Layer 1: Kingdom - examples: Animals, plants, monera, protista, and fungi
Layer 2: Phylum - examples: Chordata, mollusca, arthropoda, etc.
Layer 3: Class - examples: Insects, mammals, amphibians, etc.
Layer 4: Order
Layer 5: Family
Layer 6: Genus
Layer 7: Species
